Local Lifestyle

Shaw is one of the oldest neighborhoods in DC, but the recent changes have given the area a whole new face. This energetic neighborhood is considered an up-and-coming community because it has spent the last few years undergoing a complete renovation. It has one of the most lively night scenes in DC. Plenty of nightclubs, bars, and restaurants keep you entertained all day, and night, long.

The atmosphere in this area is friendly and inviting. At one time, this neighborhood was overlooked by DC residents and tourists. However, today, it is a sprawling area with an overwhelmingly positive vibe.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Over the last few years, Shaw has gotten more new restaurants than any other area in DC. If you want a unique fine-dining experience, you should try Oyster Oyster. This Michelin restaurant offers a world-class seasonal tasting menu that features some of the finest ingredients from various Mid-Atlantic farms. Every meal features vegetarian recipes. However, they do offer vegan options as well. You can also request to have oysters added to the tasting menu.

Another sophisticated restaurant that recently moved into town is Supra. Serving breakfast, brunch, and lunch, Supra offers various decadent recipes originating from the transcontinental country of Georgia. You´ll also enjoy their selection of fine wines, beers, and Georgian drinks.

If you are looking for a restaurant that has a more laid-back atmosphere, consider visiting Ben´s Chili Bowl. This simplistic restaurant has been serving up mouth-watering chili, hotdogs, and other treats since 1958. If you have a sweet tooth, you will definitely want to check out Virginia´s Favorite Banana Pudding, created by the original owner, Virginia Ali.

Another crowd favorite is Nellie’s Sports Bar, where you can savor great food and unique drinks while enjoying the fun vibe. You can go during the day to enjoy traditional sports bar food or check out one of their many special-themed events like Drag Brunch, Trivia Night, and Drag Bingo.

Things to Do

Shaw has an endless supply of fun. From what was once a residential zone now stands a hip commercial strip known as Blagden Alley. Here you’ll find trendy shops, uniquely themed cafes, and eclectic bars. If you prefer outdoor murals and mosaics, the art museum, DC Alley, is the perfect place to visit.

If you want a lively social scene with plenty of entertainment and food options, head down to U Street, where there are several nightclubs and music venues that allow you to dance the night away. Whether you like jazz, ska, rock, or any other genre, there’s always music you can jam to when hanging out at U Street. There are several more sights to see on U street as well. For example, you can visit the iconic cascading fountain in Meridian Hill Park, get some fresh produce at the local farmer’s market, or learn about America’s only civil war at the African American Civil War Museum. There is so much to do on U Street that you may have to come back several times before you get to try everything out.

Dog lovers and their pets will enjoy the vast space in Shaw Dog Park, which is most suitable for playing, running around, and meeting new furry friends. There is a water fountain to help keep the dogs hydrated and a filtered fountain for their owners. Open year-round, the park has a designated area for both big and small dogs.
